What does career development look like for individuals in today’s world? A platform of digital tools. Don’t want to take our word for it? Just ask Teal. Teal is a personal career development platform that gives individuals the tools, skills, and guidance they need to empower and energize their entire professional life, starting with the job search. Just like one of Grasshopper’s goals is to provide startups and small businesses with powerful digital tools to operate like a Fortune 500 company, Teal’s goal is to provide individuals with the infrastructure, tools, and data to manage their careers the same way a company does, and that alignment makes for a great partnership.
What problem is Teal trying to solve?
When it comes to navigating the job market, companies have tons of resources at their disposal: HR teams, recruiters, legal counsel, applicant tracking systems, hiring strategies and more. But what do job seekers have to navigate the complex, often excruciating, process of finding a job? Typically, all candidates really have is Google and a spreadsheet, maybe occasional advice from friends and family.
Everyone’s career path is different, but another problem with careers is people don’t know what they don’t know. Most people don’t know how to deal with a severance agreement until they get laid off or fired for the first time, or how to deal with an employment agreement that has equity in it until they receive an offer with equity in it.
“A lot of times in your career, you’re needing to learn things on the fly. You make the wrong decision the first time and learn the hard way. That’s how a lot of people approach their careers,” explains David Fano, Founder & CEO of Teal. “It’s like driving across the country with only directions on how not to get there, so how do we equip every individual with the same infrastructure, tools, data and insight that a company has?”
Teal starts by focusing on the job search because that’s when most people will stop, pause and think about their careers. And despite there already being an abundance of career help out there, Teal is motivated by the challenge of building a cost-effective solution for the marketplace and making it accessible to everyone. Most importantly, Teal aims to level the playing field by merging technology efficiencies and smart processes together in one platform to help empower individuals to grow their careers with confidence.
What makes Teal unique?
Teal is intentionally on the side of the consumer—in this case, job seekers and those looking to grow their careers—so they take a consumer-centric approach to everything they do, which means being an advocate for the individual, empowering them throughout their career journey and providing support as they navigate through the biggest challenges of today’s job market. So what is the biggest challenge that job seekers face?
“This changes daily, but the lack of feedback,” answers Dave. “It does not behoove companies to give feedback. It is very, very risky, so the risk-reward is not there.”
For this reason, Teal helps bridge the gap by providing individuals with data and insights to better understand the efficacy of their job search. This includes measuring progress by benchmarking members against other jobseekers, calculating response rates, and offering built-in tools for resume improvements, LinkedIn profile optimization, application cadence, goal setting, and more.
What’s next for Teal?
First and foremost, Teal wants to build a sustainable business that first does good, then does it well. In short, Teal wants to help a lot of people achieve more with less by leveraging technology.
“We believe the future of work is the employee as the enterprise,” proclaims Dave. “You see it a lot with the creator economy. People are switching jobs more often, and the individual is really acting like a business, so we want to make sure they have the same tools and resources that a company does. As we grow and mature as a company, we will expand into other parts of the career journey.”
In the meantime, Teal continues to launch new product updates. Just this week, the company rolled out a Resume Builder update that allows job seekers to customize the formatting of their resume with just one click, speeding up the process of tailoring their applications for the roles they apply to. Not only that, they just announced a new Career Growth Grant that will allow applicants to create a resume for a chance to win $5,000, plus dozens of other prizes. And even more tools and announcements are expected in the coming months.
In today’s competitive landscape, new companies are emerging daily, so it has become increasingly important for consumers to do business with brands that have the same values as their own. Business-to-Business is no exception. Whether it’s B2B or B2C, value-based alignment is fundamental to meaningful growth, and Grasshopper shares Teal’s commitment to making technology more accessible to everyone. Although there is an ongoing debate about whether the rapid advancement of technology is inherently good or bad, it’s important to consider all the good that technology can be used for, such as landing a job that you love or starting your own business. At the end of the day, technology is designed to help improve our quality of life, so we continue to look forward to the possibilities that lie ahead in the future.
